Falls Prevention
Falls are the most common form of injury in Australia, with more than 120,000 people being hospitalised for fall related injuries between 1999-2000. Statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) show that people aged over 65 are most at risk of falls. All treatment interventions, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy etc, aim to prevent falls from occurring and to encourage safety and independence.
At Alwyn, we also provide Falls Prevention Education in small group sessions. The focus of these groups is to encourage patient interaction by sharing experiences with one another, in turn, learning strategies for the future. The risk factors eg environmental factors, medications, vision problems, home hazards, changes in balance and walking, footwear, lack of physical activity and chronic conditions will be discussed. Participants will also receive educational material.
